2 Pin PC Fan

Jul 06, 2026

The 2 pin PC fan is the most basic and traditional wiring specification among computer cooling fans, characterized by a simple two-wire design consisting of a positive power line and a negative ground line. Compared with 3-pin speed-measuring fans and 4-pin PWM speed-regulating fans, the 2 pin PC fan has a simpler structure, lower production cost, and higher operational stability, and it has been widely used in early desktop computers, entry-level office devices, and industrial computer cooling systems. Although intelligent speed regulation and real-time speed monitoring functions are missing, its ultra-high cost performance and reliable operation make it still occupy an important market share in low-demand computer cooling scenarios.

In terms of wiring and working principle, the 2 pin PC fan adopts a pure DC power supply design. The two pins are respectively responsible for 12V DC power input and circuit grounding, with no additional signal transmission lines. After being connected to the computer power supply or motherboard fan interface, the fan will run at a fixed rated speed all the time, without automatic speed adjustment with the temperature of computer hardware. The internal circuit of the fan is simplified, without complex speed control chips and signal sensing components, which greatly reduces the failure probability caused by circuit damage and signal failure. The simple internal structure also enables the 2 pin fan to have stronger anti-interference ability, and it can operate stably in complex electromagnetic environments such as industrial control equipment and old desktop computers without stalling or jittering.

In terms of performance characteristics, 2 pin PC fans are mainly positioned in basic constant-speed heat dissipation. The mainstream models include 80mm, 120mm, and 92mm specifications, with fixed rotating speeds ranging from 1200 RPM to 2500 RPM according to different sizes. Small-size 2 pin fans have higher rotating speeds and smaller airflow, suitable for narrow space heat dissipation such as chassis hard disk positions and motherboard chipset positions; medium-size 12cm 2 pin fans have moderate airflow and noise, suitable for basic case ventilation and low-power CPU auxiliary heat dissipation. Since there is no speed regulation function, the fan will keep running at full speed as long as the computer is powered on. For low-load office scenarios, the fixed-speed operation will produce slight continuous wind noise, but it also avoids the noise jitter and speed change failure caused by intelligent speed regulation.

The installation and compatibility of 2 pin PC fans are extremely high. The 2-pin interface is compatible with the 3-pin and 4-pin fan interfaces of mainstream motherboards. Users can directly insert the 2-pin plug into the universal fan slot of the motherboard, and the system can supply power normally without adapter conversion. It is also compatible with all computer power supply D-type interfaces, which can directly take power from the power supply to realize independent operation, avoiding the problem of insufficient motherboard fan interfaces. The simple plug-and-play design makes the installation threshold extremely low, no professional debugging is required, and it can work normally after wiring, which is very suitable for novice users and old computer maintenance and replacement.

The main application scenarios of 2 pin PC fans focus on low-power and low-heat computer equipment. In old-generation desktop computers, 2 pin fans are widely used for case heat dissipation, CPU original heat sink cooling, and power supply internal heat dissipation. In modern office computers with low power consumption and low heat generation, 2 pin fans can meet daily heat dissipation needs stably with low cost. In addition, they are also commonly used in industrial control PCs, POS machines, embedded computers, and network equipment such as routers and switches. These devices have stable heat generation and no extreme heat dissipation demand, and the long-term stable constant-speed operation of 2 pin fans can ensure the continuous and normal operation of the equipment. For users who pursue cost control and only need basic heat dissipation functions, 2 pin PC fans are the most cost-effective choice, with low purchase cost, low maintenance cost, and long service life.

It is worth noting that although 2 pin PC fans lack intelligent functions, they still have irreplaceable advantages in specific scenarios. The simplified circuit structure makes their power consumption lower than that of PWM speed-regulating fans, which can save a small amount of computer power consumption during long-term operation. The mechanical structure is more durable, and it is not easy to have functional failures such as speed measurement failure and speed regulation stuck. For equipment that runs 24 hours a day all year round, such as industrial computers and server auxiliary cooling equipment, the stability of 2 pin fans is far more important than intelligent speed regulation functions. Therefore, despite the continuous upgrading of fan technology, 2 pin PC fans are still widely produced and applied, and they are classic and durable cooling components in the computer hardware industry.
