CPU Fans with Copper Heat Pipes

May 22, 2025

Heat Pipe Technology Fundamentals

Copper heat pipes are critical for transferring heat from the CPU to the heat sink efficiently. Made of copper (thermal conductivity: 401 W/mK), they use phase change (liquid-vapor cycles) to move heat up to 100x faster than solid metal. Key designs include:

Single vs. Multiple Heat Pipes: Entry-level coolers (e.g., Intel Stock Cooler) use 12 heat pipes, while premium models (e.g., NH-D15) employ 68 heat pipes for higher TDPs (200300W+).

Heat Pipe Diameter: 6mm pipes are standard for mid-range CPUs, while 8mm pipes (e.g., be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4) offer better heat dissipation for overclocked systems.

Direct Touch Technology: Brands like Cooler Master use heat pipes in direct contact with the CPU (no baseplate), reducing thermal resistance by 1520%.

Design and Compatibility

CPU fans paired with copper heat pipes must balance airflow and heat pipe placement:

Heat Pipe Alignment: Fans should be positioned to blow air across the heat pipes and fins. The Thermalright Silver Soul 125 uses a 120mm fan angled at 15° to optimize airflow over its 5x6mm heat pipes.

Fan Size Matching: Large heat sinks with many heat pipes (e.g., Uphere UR-120) often require 120mm or 140mm fans to ensure uniform cooling across all fins.

Thermal Pad vs. Paste: Some coolers (e.g., ARCTIC Freezer 34 eSports) use pre-applied thermal pads for quick installation, though thermal paste (e.g., MX-4) typically offers better performance (23°C lower temps).

Top Models and Performance Comparison

Noctua NH-U12S Chromax.Black: Features 4x6mm heat pipes and a 120mm fan, ideal for compact ATX cases, with a TDP rating of 160W.

DeepCool AK400: 4x6mm heat pipes and a 120mm RGB fan, compatible with LGA1700 and AM5, achieving 28°C temperature reduction on an i5-13600K.

利民 PA120 SE: 6x6mm heat pipes and dual 120mm fans, offering high airflow (58.5 CFM) for Ryzen 7 7700X at 220W TDP.

Maintenance and Longevity

Heat Pipe Aging: Over 57 years, heat pipe performance may degrade due to fluid loss. Regularly check for bent or corroded pipes during upgrades.

Fan Replacement: If noise increases or airflow decreases, replace the fan while retaining the heat sink (e.g., using a Noctua NF-A12x25 as a drop-in replacement).

Dust Management: Clean heat sink fins and fan blades every 612 months with compressed air to maintain optimal airflow.
